(Shawna Rochelle Kimbrell) First Black female pilot in the Air Force
MY MISSION
My name is Sophia Irvine, and I am a student at North Atlanta High School with a strong passion for aviation. I created this website to make the journey to becoming a pilot more accessible for women in America who, like me, dream of taking to the skies. Aviation has traditionally been a male-dominated field, but that’s changing, and I want to be a part of that change by helping more women navigate the path to becoming pilot with confidence. Through this project, I aim to break down the different pathways available for aspiring pilots, whether through the civilian route—paying for flight training independently and earning certifications step by step—or the military route, where pilots receive training through branches like the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and the newly established Space Force. Each path has its challenges, benefits, and requirements, and my goal is to present this information in a way that is clear and easy to understand. A huge part of my research came from my interview with Pilot John Godwin, who spent 38 years in aviation, first as a Marine fighter pilot and later as a commercial pilot for Delta. Through our conversation, he provided valuable insight into what it takes to become a pilot, the skills needed, and what life in the field is really like. He also shared advice on how to stand out in this competitive industry, how to balance work and personal life as a pilot, and why now is an excellent time to enter aviation—especially for women. His experience helped me better understand the reality of both civilian and military aviation careers, and I wanted to pass that knowledge on through this website. I created this platform not just to provide information but to empower women to pursue aviation with confidence. Whether you’re looking to fly for an airline, serve as a military pilot, or simply learn to fly for personal enjoyment, I want this website to be a starting point for your journey. The sky is no longer the limit—it’s just the beginning!

PATHWAY TO THE SKY
Here is where your journey to discovering the best path for you begins. The information in these sections comes from an interview with an experienced Marines and Delta Airlines pilot of over 35 years, as well as reputable online sources that can be found in the sources cited section. My goal is to present what I’ve learned in the most clear and efficient way possible to benefit those who are interested.
Is the military not the right path for you? No worries! The civilian route might be a better fit. This path involves funding your own flight training through a flight school or instructor, earning the necessary certifications, and building flight hours independently to qualify for commercial aviation jobs. The pace and decisions are entirely in your hands.
Interested in taking the military route? This path provides elite flight training, covers the cost of your education, and offers extensive flight experience. In return for your service commitment, you’ll gain valuable skills, discipline, and opportunities that can pave the way for a career in aviation.
